  4. What is the optimal performance I can achieve with the Access
  5. Server?
  6.  
  7. Answer:
  8. Optimal configuration is an Access Server running on a 33 Mhz
  9. machine, CGA, and a non-memory mapped adapter.  The faster the
  10. adapter the better.  As for the adapter being faster than the
  11. file server - it all depends on how much network access is
  12. required.  In most cases its probably a better idea to run a
  13. 16-bit adapter in the Access Server.

  15. The keyboard handler for Access 1.01 greatly enhances character
  16. response.  Therefore, running menus for better performance isn't
  17. as big an issue as before 1.01.

  19. As for heavy compiles, there should not be a problem as long as
  20. the Access Server is a fast machine (ie., 25 or 33 Mhz at least).
  21. Micro Focus in Palo Alto has 8 engineers connected to an Access
  22. Server and frequently performing compiles.  However, Micro Focus is
  23. looking for performance comparable to a 286.  If your customer
  24. wants 386 performance, then on a 25 Mhz machine they will start
  25. seeing a degradation after 4 users.  After 4 users they will have
  26. 286 performance up until about 10 users.  From then on they will
  27. get performance better than a 4.77 Mhz PC.  On a 25 or 33 Mhz
  28. machine, users should always get performance better than a PC.
